Biography
Gaia Formigari (Rome, 1999) is a self-taught visual artist working primarily in oil painting. Raised in Bologna, she began painting at the age of twelve. Having later relocated back to Rome, she trained as a graphic designer at the Rome University of Fine Arts, where she now teaches alongside her work as an editorial designer.
Artist's Statement
Through painting, she investigates the construction of the self in relation to the external world, observing how personal identity takes shape over time — primarily through gaze and relation to the Other. The Topos of femininity runs through her work as a complex, layered presence, marked by the taut and exhausting tension between a biologically determined vulnerability and a socially acquired aggression. Her paintings are often built from juxtapositions of multiple images, in which bodily elements, natural scenes, or animal subjects are combined to create composite images whose meaning suggests a context and situation that is never openly explained — allowing the viewer to construct their own personal interpretation of each work.
